English Paper Piecing dates back to the 1800's and the process of this hand sewing technique was very time consuming. Fabric was thread basted over paper hexagons cut from old letters or ledgers and then whip stitched together. Scissors were used to cut the fabric pieces approximately " larger than the paper shape, meaning a quilt could take years to finish by hand.
Today the same basic principles are used, but technology is a wonderful thing, making this very time consuming technique achievable by patchworkers far and wide. Up until very recently, patchworkers were still basting their fabric onto papers, sewing through the card and fabric with thread!
