This locket is exquisite! The focal point of this necklace is the glass cabochon which has been made in the style of a Mexican Opal also known as Dragon's Breath (made from glass not a gemstone). Each stone is handmade which means no two stones will be alike. With each slight turn, the colors shift from deep scarlet red to lightening strikes of blues!
What is a Mexican Opal? Mexican Opal, also known as Dragon's Breath, is a collector's nickname for man-made stones that are made of glass and mixed with certain metals to produce a brilliant color shifting effect. Colors shift from a deep to bright red with flashes of electric blue and even purples. The flashes of color from within the stone are known as the "breath" from which the name is derived. Mexican Opals were first used in jewelry in the early 1900's to simulate fire/jelly opals.
13x18mm Cabochon is set securely in a lovely vintage Victorian style locket in an antique finish (locket is made from brass). Locket is approximately 22x29mm or 1.25 inches in height x .95 inch width and holds inside photos at approximately .75 inches x .5 inch in size. Comes with a matching ink chain with lobster clasp.
