7. Donizetti: Maria di Rohan

Description

According to the late Donizetti expert William Ashbrook, Maria di Rohan is the composer s, tautest, most melodramatic opera and shows him, in complete control of his musico-dramatic goals. The work was first performed in Vienna, but Donizetti revised it for its Paris premiere. Working from the new critical edition of the score, with the period-instrument Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Sir Mark Elder, Opera Rara has recorded the original Vienna version as well as some of the appendices from the Paris revision. Recorded in the studio this set comes with a lavishly illustrated book including a complete libretto with an English translation, comprehensive article and synopsis by the eminent 19th-century musical scholar, Jeremy Commons.

8. Rossini: Aureliano in Palmira

Description

One of Rossini's rarest scores, the dramma serio Aureliano in Palmira was written during his miraculous 21st year (1813), when Rossini produced four operas in all. The other three - the comedies Il signor Bruschino and L'italiana in Algeri, plus the tragedy Tancredi - indicate not only his amazing fertility of his inventive powers but also the staggering quality of his youthful writing. Even so, Rossini fans will recognize the overture to Aureliano, which he recycled in three other scores, most notably Il barbiere di Siviglia. On the way to the opera's inevitable happy ending, there is plenty of extreme emotion to fire-up some exciting vocal writing. A great success in its day, Aureliano promises to thrill another generation of listeners in this new studio recording under Maurizio Benini. The set includes a lavishly illustrated book including a complete libretto with an English translation by Jeremy Commons and a synopsis by Richard Osborne.

9. Donizetti: Caterina Cornaro

Description

Caterina Cornaro was the last of Donizetti's operas to be premiered in his lifetime, and the only opera of his later period not to have had a quality modern recording. Conductor David Parry explains, ''The opera requires a prima donna with a wonderful voice, extraordinary technique and exceptional histrionic ability... The story is resonant and believable, a woman forced into a political marriage with a king who is assassinated, leaving her to rule on her own. This calls up from Donizetti one of his most deeply felt, atmospheric and dramatically truthful scores.'' Opera Rara's two-disc set is accompanied by a complete libretto with an English translation alongside an article and synopsis by the eminent 19th-century musical scholar, Jeremy Commons.
